TREE CARE TIPS

The following information is offered in response to resident questions about trees in our Community. The new growth on maple trees is very vulnerable in the Spring before “hardening-up” in early Summer. Dropping leaves recently observed were caused by stress due to lack of water and combined with some high winds. Also, leaves with scale or spots can only be effectively treated by spraying in the very early Spring. However, these conditions will not permanently damage the tree.

Here are some tree care tips:

  • Don’t let grass grow around base of tree. Mulch around tree and cup mulch at base.
  • Water trees weekly with hose at base.
  • Clean off the light green scale on tree trunks (usually on shady side of tree). Use a dry laundry brush. Do NOT use a wire brush.
  • Can you walk under your trees? If not then you must “elevate” each of the trees on your property - including the street side trees. All low branches should be pruned off at the trunk. This is something you or a tree service can do. Also, you can call the Clubhouse or Miller and request them to give you an estimate for this service.

Remember that you have a big investment in your trees. A typical replacement tree costs about $450 today. It’s easier to give some TLC right now!

Ponderings From the Manager

Doesn’t the community look beautiful? Miller is doing such a great job! The flowers, the grass; everything! As the weather gets into the depth of summer, please have some concern about the men out working in the heat. Occasionally they may need a drink of water or a soaking on a really hot day. They may use your hose to do so. Please be cooperative and allow them to do so! If you would rather they not use your hose, let me know in the office and we’ll be sure they don’t! There will be a pot luck luncheon to say thank you to them on August 13th at noon. Your support In this effort is greatly appreciated!

I have a safety concern with exiting the gate. Please note that there is a stop sign posted north of the sidewalk before reaching Tienken road. This is for the safety of the pedestrians who may be crossing our entrance. Please be sure to stop at that sign to avoid any severe mishaps. You will need to stop again at Tienken before turning right or left. Please drive safely in the community!

There are some other community concerns to share! One concern is your help with cleaning up after social and events at the Clubhouse. Everyone can help just by cleaning up after yourself! Example is throwing away all disposal materials before leaving your seat or table.

Remember that this is not a restaurant; we don’t have that kind of staff! Your cooperation is greatly appreciated and will enable us not to have to increase prices even more to cover staff for that purpose! Secondly, when taking bus trips with the community (especially motor coach trips), please remember NOT to save a series of seats for all your friends that may be coming. It’s fine to save the seat next to you in a single row; however saving several rows of seats is not allowed. If you’d like to sit together, everyone needs to be there early to get the seats! Reserving seats is not fair to everyone else who is attending and trying to obtain a seat. Again, thank you for being considerate!

If you are the owner of one of the exercise balls that we have in storage in the exercise closet at the Clubhouse, please make arrangements to come pick them up! We will no longer be storing them in the closet. Some of them are marked; several of them are not. We would like to have them removed as soon as possible, no later than August 1st. We need the room for other storage items. If the balls will be needed in exercise class, the instructor will tell you when to bring them to class. Your cooperation in retrieving your ball will be greatly appreciated!

Calling all nurses; retired or otherwise! Often we have an emergency situation where we need immediate response or consultation. If you are a nurse and would be willing to be on a list to be called on upon occasion, please call me at the Clubhouse and let me know. On the same subject, nine people from Heritage were trained and certified in AED CPR in June. Training included use of our difibulator in an emergency situation. Those trained include: Karen Brierly-Reagan, Terri Ricketts, Alex Robinson, Nelson Davey, Bernie Ris, Bob Wolf, Don Cassidy, Karen Milam and Dick Hansen. Just one more way to keep our community safe and prepared!

Our Pool Operator, Alex Robinson, is interested in doing some “odd” jobs for the residents. He can do landscape work such as picking weeds or cleaning up gardens or odd jobs you may need in your home. Many have already hired him to do miscellaneous tasks. If you are interested in Alex’s help, call the office to request his help and we will arrange for Alex to get in touch with you.

Have you seen the remodeling and new furniture in the Clubhouse office? It is simply awesome! The two desks allow Terri and I to have our own working surfaces and the updates of furniture just makes it look so professional and neat. We would like to thank all of you for this project; we are so proud! Come on in and take a look!

In late August there will be a Pool Party Murder Mystery. We need 12—20 adults to take part in this fun event assuming the roles of  suspiciously wacky murder mystery characters while enjoying a luau. Characters could be a victim, suspect, or detective. Everyone will be invited to the event to determine “who done it”! It will be an event at the poolside and will be guaranteed fun! If you would be interested in  participating with taking a part; please contact me in the office as soon as possible! One meeting will be all we will need prior to the event. Men and women are needed; so everyone put on your charm, use your drama abilities and take an active part! Hope to hear from you NOW! We need you to make this event a success! It’s a first so let’s do it!!

In this newsletter you will find a new Homeowner Visitor Sheet to complete. There is a great need to update the visitor cards used at the gate. All cards will be updated. Please complete this form and return to the Office (not to the gate house) as soon as possible. And a reminder, if you haven’t turned in the Homeowner Information Sheet, we need you to complete one immediately. AND if you haven’t picked up your Pool Rules Book, do it today! So nice to see so many enjoying the pool during this hot, summery weather! Keep it up and enjoy the summer.

THE RED HAT HOT HONEYS HAPPENINGS

The Red Hat outing on Thursday, June 25th touring Berloni of America Italian-made kitchens and furnishings was hosted by Sylvia Imbrunnone and Kathy Mischley. Lunch was at Grand Traverse Pie Company. Because of timing, this was written before the actual event. Will have more about it in the August newsletter.

As of now, we do not have volunteers for events in July, August, September and October. Therefore, nothing is planned for the rest of the year. A list of outing suggestions is at the Clubhouse, along with a sign-up sheet. Remember that these months are the only ones left in 2009 for events. There will be no events in November and December.

Enjoy the Summer! Gerri Molnar

(From the June, 2009 Board of Directors Meetings)

To increase communications about Board activities we are placing a brief overview of some of the topics
discussed at each month’s Board meeting in the Monthly newsletter. Here are some topics from last month:

ASSOCIATION NEWS

Here’s an update on recent projects in and around the clubhouse:

  1. The office has been re-painted and renovated. Some of the cabinets were removed or repositioned and new desks have been installed. Please stop by and take a look the next time you are at the clubhouse. We think you’ll agree the office makes a wonderful first impression for our visitors.
  2. Our new bookcase for the library is being constructed and should soon be in place.
  3. The dormers on the roof of the clubhouse are in the process of being refurbished. This will eliminate the need for maintenance in the future.
  4. The tennis courts have been resurfaced and re-striped. They look great and are ready for your
    tennis and pickle ball games.
  5. The floor tile in the kitchen has been replaced with ceramic tile. The appearance is attractive and
    maintenance will be much easier.
  6. The bulletin board that was previously at the tennis courts has been renovated and moved to the pool area. Look for the sign-in sheet at this location along with any notices and announcements pertaining to the community and pool.

It has come to our attention that residents who have recently purchased new General Motors cars are having difficulty programming their cars to open the entry gates. Our manager and several Board
members have investigated this issue and found that Lear (along with Selectronics) will be installing a transmitter that will solve this problem at no cost to the Association. This will take at least a month to complete the installation.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Once again our Treasurer reports that our budget is on track at this time.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE

The general condition of trees throughout the community was reviewed with Bob Miller of Miller
Landscaping. We are assured that there are currently no diseases endangering our healthy maple and pear trees. Please read the tree care write-up in this newsletter for tips on improving the health of the trees on your property.
