KUNDALINI YOGA: FINDING TIME TO MEDITATE BY SHERLA
EVANS
Today I offer you thoughts on Meditation written by
freelance writer and friend Katrina Bos. Katrina lives and works a dairy
farm with her husband and 3 children in Canada. She is a certified
Kundalini yoga instructor and teaches yoga classes as I do. Her writing
is homespun, chatty and informative. I know you will enjoy reading what
she has to say about meditation; and besides, it’s good to get other
perspectives on this yoga technology.
“How many of us would love to have a few more hours in the day? How much
more could we get accomplished? How much more down-time could we have if
there were just a couple more hours after we got home from work? But how
do we get it? Work faster? Work harder? Choose to do different things?
Maybe. But there might be a different option. According to Yogi Bhajan,
the man who brought kundalini yoga to the West, the best way to find
more time in the day is to meditate every day. Say what? That’s
ridiculous! How can I find the time to meditate if I don’t have enough
time in the day already? Well, the interesting thing about meditation is
that it focuses the mind. It calms the emotions. It brings us to the
present. It teaches our minds to become “one-pointed”, focused and
clear. When you meditate each day, the rest of your day becomes easier.
Your mind is calmer. You tend to be more centred, more focused on the
task. You make better decisions. You don’t make as many mistakes. Things
run more smoothly. It becomes clearer what you want to do in a day.
Without being distracted and constantly rushing, you find yourself able
to sit still for a moment and make true choices in your day as opposed
to just doing things out of habit or convenience. But most of all, you
are more present. Each moment starts to stand on its own. Because of
this, the world seems to slow down. It doesn’t feel like you are rushing
from one thing to the next. As each thing comes up in the day, you just
work with it, and go on to the next thing. But what if you aren’t into
yoga or meditation? What if that just isn’t your bag? The great thing is
that meditation is something very natural for humans. Different groups
teach different styles of meditation and each of them have a specific
effect on the mind. But regular meditation can look like all kinds of
things. It can look like relaxing with a cup of tea on your front porch
each morning. Or it can look like your morning run or a regular walk
through the woods. Whatever calms the mind and brings you centred is
beautiful meditation. I have done some of my best meditating just
sitting on my couch staring into space just waiting for my mind to stop
spinning. Eventually itr always comes back to the present. If your
morning meditation is your cup of coffee and the morning newspaper,
consider for a time, skipping the newspaper. It winds the mind up and
gets in the hyper-drive of the world. If your evening meditation is
lying in bed watching the 11 o’clock news, consider skipping the news
and just closing your eyes and relaxing for 20 minutes before bed. The
point is to relax, become centred, and remember that YOU are actually
somewhere inside that mass of thoughts, goals, expectations, and worries
that we carry around with us all of the time. So. If you find yourself
at the end of your rope—not enough time in the day to get anything done
and burning the candle at both ends, consider taking 10 or 20 minutes
each day to just relax, centre yourself, and meditate - in whatever way
works for you. Meditation isn’t rocket science. We are made for it. All
we have to do is find the time.”
Kundalini Yoga will begin with Sherla on Wednesday, May 18th at 6:00 pm
at the Clubhouse. Watch for more information in the April newsletter!

Ponderings From the Manager
Finally March is here and spring is approaching! Wasn’t February the
longest shortest month ever?! The longer days, less bitter cold weather
and the sounds of birds is very refreshing! I am reminded of the warmer
weather that is on it’s way as I schedule the pool and spa opening, talk
to the county and prepare for summer! So, for all of us that has stayed in
Auburn Hills to fight the weather; hang in there! Warmth is on the
horizon!
A month like February (and March) reminds us of the importance of
laughter. It’s so easy to get those winter blues. Our surroundings have
such a big impact on us and after so many months of winter, moods begin to
resemble the dirty, slushy, gray world outside. It almost seems we walk
around as if a dark cloud is inside our head. Everything looks gloomy and
depressing. It almost seems we’ll be stuck forever in winter. But then we
get that eerie silence and we look outside to the world and see the most
sparkling, beautiful and inviting place imaginable. A late night snow
storm that covers everything with a soft pristine layer of white. The sun
is up and shining brightly; everywhere the snow dances with light. Then
the dark clouds disappear and you can begin laughing. It almost seems like
a great joke. Winter, the dark tormentor of the soul, pulls a fast one and
slips in a day of incredible purity and beauty just to remind us to enjoy
it for the moment and laugh! Laughter can be more satisfying than honor;
more precious than money; more heart-cleansing than prayer! How long has
it been since you have had a good belly-laugh? Good laughter seems to be a
treasure that is in short supply sometimes. Laughter is one of the gifts
of being human! We can’t force it, but we can sure stop suppressing it!
Laughter is like the human body wagging its tail! Take time this March to
enjoy a good laugh! And if you want to share it; give me a call!
As of this writing, we are expecting the delivery of our new dining room
chairs. We are excited and hope you let us know how you like them. They
will certainly brighten up the room and will make moving around those
round tables much easier. Be sure to take a look at them when you come
into the Clubhouse next time!
As the snow melts, you may notice some damage caused by the plows during
the snow season. Please call the office and report it to us and we will
pass it along to Miller in late April to do the repairs. Miller will fix
any damage done by them. If you choose to get another contractor to do the
work, Miller will NOT reimburse you for those charges; so be sure to call
the office when you see a problem. Remember that Miller also does work for
individual homeowners. If you would like more information on their
services, feel free to give them a call. They will be here in April or May
for a seminar to talk about the services they offer.
With spring approaching, there are some reminders. Sure you will be
anxious to get out and walk your pets. Please be
responsible pet owners! Pick-up after your dog while walking and please
remember all pets MUST be leashed. Dispose of their droppings
appropriately; do not throw it into the woods or into the ponds. Take it
home and throw it in your trash! Remember that this is not only a Heritage
policy but also an Auburn Hills ordinance. Your cooperation will be
greatly appreciated by all .., even your pet! Also remember to check out
the outside of your home. Are your garage lights working properly? Do your
porch pillars need painting? Woodside Painting does a great job at
repairing and painting them. Get ready for spring!
We have received another delivery of yellow pages for you! They are in the
craft room so feel welcome to pick one up next time you are at the
Clubhouse. Also, included in this newsletter is a new Homeowners
Information Sheet and Photo Release. It is time we have these updated for
everyone! Please complete the form and return it to the office at your
earliest convenience. If you have received it and are out-of-town, please
complete it and mail it back to us or bring it back when you return. We
thank you in advance for getting these back to us! It is important to have
this information in the office in case of emergency.
Lastly, while in and around the Clubhouse remember The Golden Rules for
Living. Here they are: “If you open it, close it. If you turn it on, turn
it off. If you unlock it, lock it up. If you break it, admit it. If you
can’t fix it, call someone who can. If you borrow it, return it. If you
value it, take care of it. If you make a mess, clean it up. If you move
it, put it back. If it belongs to someone else and you want to borrow it,
ask permission. If you don’t knowhow to operate it, let it alone. If it’s
none of your business, don’t ask questions. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix
it! If it will brighten someone’s day, say it. If it will tarnish
someone’s reputation, keep it to yourself!” Thank you!
Be sure to join us for some of the fun events this month. Hope to see you
at the St. Patrick’s Celebration Luncheon! Note a couple events happening
in early April. The time to sign up for those is now! Happy Spring to all
and ERIN GO BRAUGH!
