NOTES OF THANKS …
From Residents to Your Home
- Fondly sent by Nancy Lund: Dear Friends and
Neighbors; Thank you for the beautiful fall arrangement of flowers! It
is lovely and both Ralph and I are enjoying them. We appreciate your
thinking of us. We will share it with our family over Thanksgiving.
Thank you again!
- Gratefully shared by Rosemary Sharland: Thank you for
the beautiful basked of flowers I received during my recent hospital
stay. Your cards and phone calls were very much appreciated. The
thoughtfulness and loving, caring community just can’t be beat! I’m
forever grateful!
- With love sent by Hazel and Reid Steinmetz: Dear
Heritage Hills Residents; We treasure our friends and home in Heritage.
We feel very blessed. The quilt the ladies made Reid (a great golfing
blanket in our living room colors) is very much appreciated. Since we
are Florida snowbirds, the warmth it provides is wonderful! The two
Dick’s (Brennan and Hansen) delivered it along with a delicious bread.
We wish to thank all of you. The prayers offered for us sprinkles from
heaven and they are working! On a recent visit to our Doctor I was
giving him credit for keeping Reid so healthy and he said, “trust me,
it’s a divine intervention. There must be many prayers going up for
Reid.” Healing is such a blessing! We wish each of you the same grace
from our Father. Much love.
- Another sent Fondly from Hazel and Reid to Marian
Hansen: The poppyseed bread was delicious. We just finished eating it.
It was a great sweet with our breakfast. Thank you! The blanket is
toasty. We just aren’t used to cold weather, so we use it A LOT. Thank
the girls for us. We leave for Florida December 1st. Have a great
winter!
- Fondly sent by Ruth Smith: Dear Friends of Heritage
in the Hills; I would like to thank you for the lovely fall floral
arrangement and the cards I received during my knee surgery. It was a
wonderful surprise and most thoughtful. I appreciate everyone’s wishes
for a speedy and full recovery and I am well on my way to meeting that
goal!
- Gretchen Thams shares her thanks: Dear Friends:
Thanks to all of you who voted for me for the Auburn Hills Library
Board. I’m pleased to day I won with over 1,500 votes (100 votes more
than anyone else on the ballot!) If you have any comments or concerns
about the library, please share them with me. Thank you again for your
support.
- Margaret Bonhardt send her sincere thanks: I want to
thank the wonderful people of Heritage in the Hills for the beautiful
flowers, prayer shawl, cards, prayers, food and visits during my lengthy
stay in the hospital and rehab facility. It is truly a caring community
and one I feel blessed to be a part of.
- Sally Wilkins writes: Thank you all so much for your
thoughtfulness, prayers and the beautiful fall bouquet of flowers. They
are beautiful!
- Flo Dorman writes with appreciation: Thank you
Heritage in the Hills for the beautiful basket of flowers. It is so nice
to live in Heritage where your friends and neighbors are so thoughtful.
The flowers, visits, prayers, and phone calls are so greatly
appreciated! Thank you all

Ponderings From the Manager
Before we could finish the leaf clean-up; the snow
began to fall! Too soon we’ve had a good falling of snow! Just to remind
you, Miller will respond once there is at least a one inch accumulation of
snow. They may come out and do the main roads if there are ice conditions.
I ask for your patience while they are doing their work. They work as
efficiently as they can in getting the community cleaned up as quickly as
possible. Remember to do your best in not parking cars on the streets if
possible. If you do, please understand that there is a good chance that
the car will be plowed in; depending on the amount of snow fall we have.
If you do have a car that isn’t parked in the garage and you know that
Miller is near your home, you can work with them by moving the car from
the drive-way so that it can be cleaned. Once it is cleaned, move it back
up to the drive-way so that the snow can be cleared from the street. This
always seems to be a problem with cars not parked in the garage. Your
support and cooperation in helping will be greatly appreciated and will
assure a safe environment for everyone! Please also remember to get out
and pick-up your newspapers that may be delivered to your drive-way or
sidewalk. Those newspapers always cause problems for the snow removal
equipment. Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!
I hope you have all had a chance to come to the clubhouse to see the
beauty of the season in full! The many hands of residents really made it
outstanding! It truly is breath-taking and beautiful. The outside lights
also look great too thanks to Miller Landscape! Have you noticed our new
design at the entrance of the community? We have purchased all new lights
there and some new decorations. Hope you truly enjoy them and are proud of
the way the entrance is decorated. The clubhouse lights are very pretty as
well. Enjoy the beauty of the season!
Several have been asking about the new Heritage Cookbook. YES, they will
be in just in time for holiday giving! As soon as they come in, those that
have pre-ordered books will be notified. We will have extras on sale in
the clubhouse. Stop on in and take a look at it! It appears to be another
great cookbook; one you will want to have on-hand. And what a great idea
for a gift! Take your favorite recipe from the book; put all the
ingredients in a basket (along with a copy of the cookbook) and what a
great gift to give to that someone special!
I hope you will join us with the many celebrations of the holiday we offer
this month. The Holiday Open House is quickly upon us. Hope you plan on
stopping by for a delicious cup of punch. We also have the Heritage Belles
doing their Christmas Concert with a dessert following. There is also a
Ladies Holiday Luncheon/Tea; Our 3rd Annual Cookie Exchange; a Holiday
Sing-Along and then the celebration of 2008 with the New Years Eve
Parties. Hope you join us! Have a blessed holiday season!
I, along with the Heritage in the Hills staff, wish you all the
happiest of holidays. We wish you the gladness of Christmas which is
hope; the spirit of Christmas which is peace; and the heart of
Christmas which is love. Be sure to take time to laugh and to hug!
Remember to wish, to dream and to hope. Take time to wonder, to
reflect and to remember; for this time is a gift and a blessing.
Merry Christmas; Happy Hanukkah; Happy Kwanzaa and Happy New Year!
Peace and love to all from our hearts to yours.
Fondly,
Karen and Terri |

- Saturday, April 12th, 2008 - Pat Benatar at
the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $62. Pat
Benatar’s polished mainstream pop/rock made her one of the more popular
female vocalists of the early 80’s. Although she came on like an arena
rocker with her power chords, tough sexuality, and powerful vocals, her
music was straight pop/rock underneath all the bluster. “Hit Me With
Your Best Shot”, “Treat Me Right”, and “Heartbreaker” are some of her
favorites. During the 80’s, Benatar became one of the most played
artists on MTV, enjoyed sold-out tours and received several Grammy
Awards. Money for tickets must be paid by 3-1-08. Tickets must be paid
upon ordering. Sign-up immediately or by 2-15-08 (15).

Why Are “Social Activities” In The Budget?
A question was raised at the Annual Meeting relative to the category
“Social Activities” in the annual budget. In essence, the question was,
since residents that participate in social activities usually pay to
participate, why do we need to budget $22,000 for social activities? The
quick and easy answer is,
participants don’t pay for everything, but it deserves some explanation.
The category “Social Activities” has appeared in the budget since the
Clubhouse was first constructed in the Heritage in the Hills community. In
early days, Toll Brothers/US Homes set aside about $10,000
annually in the old Master Association budget to start and underwrite a
strong social calendar as part of the identity and lifestyle of an Active
Adult Community. The “hub” of the community was (and is) the Clubhouse.
Employing a full time Activities Director and providing a wide range of
social opportunities for residents was considered essential to compete
with other communities of this type and to maintain high property values.
Today, we have grown to 281 homes and nearly 500 residents and the budget
has grown commensurate with the community to $22,000 annually. The budget
has remained the same, however, for three years. Every home site
contributes about $6.52 out of their monthly assessment to maintain this
amenity and keep Heritage in the Hills a desired community in which to
live. Residents that participate in the wide variety of activities
contribute more by paying reasonable fees for food and drink, tickets,
transportation, professional services (i.e. exercise), etc. For example,
total expenditures this year for the category “Social Activities” (through
October) was $52,989.97. Residents participating in social events
contributed $32,559.30. The difference of $20,430.67 was funded from the
budget.
The budget category “Social Activities” covers all costs associated with
all Clubhouse activities whether they are contributory or not. The hourly
wages for our visiting professionals and our resident bus drivers,
professional association memberships, entertainment, catering services,
new music for the Heritage Belles, instrument rental, all publication and
magazines, pantry items, paper goods, utensils, and many, many more
miscellaneous costs are budgeted. Things as simple as the morning coffee
and cookies in the kitchen and the Oakland Press in the lobby are part of
“Social Activities”.
Furthermore, events that are contributory are, at best, profit neutral and
more likely operate at a slight loss, simply because its nearly impossible
to consider all potential costs for certain events until the event
actually takes place. The budget picks up any difference. Charging
residents reasonable fees to participate encourages more participation and
improves the overall satisfaction of living in Heritage in the Hills.
Residents that do not participate in Clubhouse events do so by choice but
can rest assured that their small monthly contribution helps to maintain a
vibrant, highly valued community which is beneficial to all residents.
Overall, the Board feels confident that the majority of residents will
agree that maintaining a strong social calendar is critical to defining
Heritage in the Hills as one of the most desirable places to live in
Oakland County and one of the best Active Adult Communities in the State.

AND ENDS
PERK UP WITH PEPPERMINT
If December’s hustle and bustle has left
you wiped out, grab a candy cane! Studies show that smelling or tasting of
peppermint offers a quick pick-me-up. The aroma has the same effect as a
whiff of smelling salts! Grab a candy cane at the Clubhouse then sit back,
relax and enjoy! Then go trim that tree!
