A special thanks to all those who brought a dish (Marian Hansen, Linda Foltz, Mary Jo Ulfig, Marcie Robbins, Jill Starwalt, LaVerne Luttermoser, Ida Getzen, Jo McDonald, Mary Troff, Sylvia Bucknavich, Margaret Gibson and Marge Allasio) that was yummy good! Also a heartfelt thanks to the many hands that helped set-up or clean-up (all the above plus Cathy Hansen, Sue Ellen Miller and Bette McCullough). Thanks for making it a wonderful afternoon!

  • The newest sports craze today is Pickle Ball. Thanks to Al & Cathy Hansen, we are able to offer here beginning last month. Effective September 1st there will be a new exercise payment policy. The Board and the manager have reviewed the expense of the exercise program we offer at Heritage. Although we agree to continue to subsidize the program we have had to review the percentage. The budget will now subsidize the exercise program by 50%. We will continue to offer the best programs available with the best trainers. It is the best offering in the area; especially when you think about the individualization you receive in our classes.

Through September we will offer the following exercise classes:

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 am - Floor/Aerobic
    Exercise with Pat Halstead
  • Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30 pm - Chair Exercise with Pat
  • Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 - Pool Exercise with Pat
  • Thursday at 6:00 pm - Yoga with Tracey Flynn
  • Saturday at 11:00 am - Pool Aerobics with Shelley Kletter
(All classes are approximately one hour long)

The following price policy will be effective immediately:

If you take one class offering per WEEK, you will pay $20 for the MONTH. If you take two OR MORE class offerings per WEEK, you will pay $30 for the MONTH. There will be no refunds for missed classes. There will be no reduction in price for less than one class per week.

Overview: You could take 9 exercise classes per week for only
$30 a month! You can mix and match all classes and get the best exercise program! We encourage participation and good health!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT HERITAGE IN THE HILLS

Looking for those that might be interested in calling BINGO once a month at the Clubhouse. We use the ball dice with the cage which makes shuffling and calling easy. The balls have the letter and number imprinted on them. If you would be willing to get involved with using your “outside” voice; then talk to Karen or Terri in the office.

Also looking for those that would be interested in coming over and learning how to use the DVD player and sound system to turn on a movie at the clubhouse a couple times a month. It would also involve turning the system off and securing the clubhouse. If you would be interested, please talk to Karen or Terri in the office. THANK YOU for considering to be a helping hand!

NOTES OF THANKS …
From Residents to Your Home

  • Sharon Pierce writes: Thank you for the basket of flowers which brightened my hospitalization for back surgery. It certainly reminded me of the friendships and support found among our Heritage neighbors.

  • Gerri Black shares her thanks: I would like to thank the residents of Heritage in the Hills for the beautiful flowers I received. They are helping in my speedy recovery.

  • Pam Butzier writes: I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed receiving your lovely flowers. I needed a lift and that really lightened the heart. I am recovering in a nursing facility, but hope to get home soon. I love our community and all the good people in it. Many, many thanks!

  • Bunny Harms fondly shares her thoughts: My day was made more beautiful upon receiving the basket of cherry, colorful blooms. The flowers chased away the gloomy, overcast days; and your kindness lifted my spirit and heart. Thank you and God bless all who live at Heritage in the Hills.

  • Jill Starwalt thanks Heritage Friends and Neighbors: What a lovely surprise the beautiful basket of flowers was to receive. The bouquet was packed with a beautiful variety of colorful blooms. Each one reminding me of your cheerful thoughts and wishes. Thank you so much for your kindness. That really lifts one’s spirits.

  • Miller Landscape sends their many thanks: Thank you to everyone who helped out and provided lunch for the Miller Landscape Turf Crew. It was very much appreciated and the food was great! Thanks again!!

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY

To Barbara Shrem in the loss of her husband, Victor, last month. Victor will be missed and remembered by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and with your family at this most difficult time.

To Camille Barton in the death of her mother earlier in this summer. Camille’s mom had been ill for a while and we just learned of her death. Camille, know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU …

Words are inadequate for expressing the appreciation that our family and I have for the overwhelming outpouring of love from this community: the beautiful plant basket, the cards, food, and flowers, the many words of caring and encouragement, the helpfulness and consideration shown by so many, in so many ways.

Victor had requested that I have a luncheon at the clubhouse for the many friends we have made here. This was generously and perfectly orchestrated by Joyce Sanders and Ann Moran, with the cooperation of Karen and Terri in the office, aided by a host of helpers from set up, to serving, to clean up. Thanks to ALL of you, and to all who attended. Victor would have been so touched, as was I. Living in such a beautiful community has helped to ease the pain of my loss. Thank you all!

Barbara Shrem

Ponderings From the Manager

FBy now you should all have received a mailing from the office with a letter announcing the upcoming Fall Annual Meeting (Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 pm) at St. John Fisher Church. In that mailing were also two other important pieces of paper. The first is the Designated Voter form. Our by-laws state that one person in each home be designated as the “voter” on all association business. This form is good for one year (October 2007 thru October 2008). It is imperative that these forms are turned in prior to the Ballot mailing to assure your vote will count! So, please be sure you complete the form and get it into the office as soon as possible. The second form you have received is the Nomination Form. This is your opportunity to nominate residents that you feel would represent the association well to sit on the Board of Directors. We have four Board members who have expiring terms. If they are re-nominated, they will be asked just like all nominees if they have an interest in running. All interested nominees will then present a resume to me. By mid-September you will receive the nomination form plus the resumes of all those running. The Designated Voter in your home will then vote for no more than four candidates. The top four will be elected at the Annual Meeting onto the Board of Directors for a two year term. It is important that you complete the forms and turn them into the office by the dates given. If you will be out-of-town at the time of the ballot mailing, please notify the office for your options. We can mail the ballot to the address where you will be or you can complete a Proxy form to designate a neighbor or friend to vote for you. Again, talk to the office for your options.

At this time of the year I know many of the “snowbirds” are making plans to head south. Before leaving, please remember to complete an “Absence Form” with the office. This will give us your correct address, phone number and emergency contact should we need it in your absence. This form must be completed each year, we don’t keep them from year-to-year. If you would like to receive the monthly newsletter, The Heritage Headlines, we will gladly mail it to you each month. Do remember that you can access the newsletter and calendar here on the website . Also remember if you use the “user name” and “password” you can also access the “Residents Only” section which has the Directory & Resident List combined in it. If you don’t know the user name or password, contact the office. Please don’t share this information with non-residents. To all those beginning travel, we wish you all a safe trip and a blessed winter season! Call us once in a while and we’ll remind you of the cold temperatures and the snow fall we are experiencing here!

With the season change you will note some scheduled changes. The pool and spa is scheduled to be closed for the season on October 1st. The pool area will remain open thru September so be sure to come on down and use them! You will also notice that the office hours will change. We will be closed on Sunday’s except when there is a scheduled event. The office hours during the week will continue to be 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Saturday hours will be 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. My days off will continue to be Sunday and Monday. You will find Andrea or Terri in the office on Monday and Terri throughout the week as her schedule allows. The office will be closed daily from 1:00 - 2:00 pm for our scheduled lunch hour. If the office is closed other than this time, it will be posted on the door as to why.

Here are a couple other reminders! If you call the clubhouse and we don’t answer the phone, please don’t assume we aren’t there! We aren’t always sitting at the desk when the phone rings. Perhaps we are showing a visitor around the clubhouse or preparing for a social or upcoming event or doing something outside of the office but in the clubhouse. Please leave a message on the voice mail and we’ll be checking the voice mail in a timely fashion and will gladly return your phone call. Also please understand that although we welcome you to stop in and see us in the office, we must continue to do our jobs and do the required office work. We appreciate your understanding.

You will find dates included in this newsletter for all the holiday events such as our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner and our Annual Holiday Open House. Please plan on joining with us and marking your calendar now! Sign-up early to guarantee your attendance! There are also many things that have been scheduled for the future. Although the dates seem far away, remember that many of these events must be committed to early when we are purchasing tickets, securing a motor coach, etc. So be sure to look through and act early!

This month we will notice a beautiful change in our community. The leaves will be changing and falling. The clubhouse will come alive with colors of fall. It is one of my favorite times of year! Enjoy! Wishing all a Happy Fall Season!!

If no other fee is charged, the bus fee must be included in check form made out to Heritage in the Hills. If your name is on the Waiting List for an event and you’d like to drive on your own, let us know in the office and we will try to get additional tickets if possible. The number shown in at the end is the number needed to make the trip possible. If this number isn’t met by the sign-up date, the trip will be cancelled. Refunds will be made available up to 48 hours prior to the trip IF tickets have not yet been purchased. Please do not sign-up yourself on sheets where a fee is charged. UPCOMING PLAY REVIEWS

VILLAGE PLAYERS PRESENTS HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES
The play is written by John Guare. The show is based on the Pope’s visit to New York City on October 4, 1965. The story focuses on one man’s desire for success as a big-time songwriter, which clashes with the middle-class life.

AVON PLAYERS PRESENTS A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM
This show takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. The result is a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan for his young master, in exchange for freedom.

They will be donated locally. We are also making crocheted Santa Boots which will be used by the Heritage Belles as gifts for the residents when they play at care homes during the holiday season. (From the August, 2007 Board Meeting)

To increase communications about Board activities we are placing a brief overview of some of the topics discussed at each month’s Board meeting in the Monthly newsletter. Here are some topics from last month:

ASSOCIATION NEWS:
  1. The Board has voted to seal coat and re-stripe the parking lot and have a stripe painted down the center of Heritage Drive along with having a white band and the word STOP painted on the street at the stop sign. Hopefully this will prevent drivers from going through the intersection without coming to a complete stop.

  2. New speed limit signs have been ordered and will be installed shortly.

  3. Heritage in the Hills provides many exercise options for residents. If you participate in the morning exercise classes, chair exercise, yoga or either of the water aerobics classes, please remember that payment for the class is due at the beginning of each month. Because the instructors are paid whether or not you come to class, we are unable to give refunds or credit for missed classes.

CLUBHOUSE:

  1. The Board is investigating having the bocce court re-done; however, before we vote to take on this expense, we would like to know if the courts will be used. If you have an interest in using the bocce court, please give your name to Karen Reagan. If there is sufficient interest, we will take on this project in the spring of 2008.

  2. We are looking for volunteers to join a committee for the purpose of taking care of the library in the
clubhouse. If you are interested in participating, please give your name to Karen Reagan.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE:

Pond Maintenance:
DTE has received our application and fee for installation of a meter at the north pond. We are attempting to confirm an installation date for the meter. We appreciate the patience of the residents around the north pond while we have been working to complete this project.

Landscaping:
Our landscape company will begin weed control around the pond and the program to control the weeds in the pond will be done this fall.

MILLER LANDSCAPE UPDATES AND NEWS

Just as a reminder, all street trees are the responsibility of the resident. We have noticed that many street trees (and many yard trees) are in need of elevating, or trimming. Many of these trees are causing a hazard to pedestrians, mail carriers, and to us as we try to maintain your lawn. If you can’t walk under it; it needs to be elevated (or trimmed).

Of course you could do this trimming on your own. However, Miller Landscape is willing to come in and do the work for you at approximately $20 per tree. If you are interested in having Miller do the work for you, please let Karen know in the office and she will arrange to have an appointment set for you. Now is the time to have this done! Call today to schedule your appointment so that your trees are maintained with the best of care. Thank you!
