Special Recognition To Our Residents:
  • A very special thanks to all who helped make the Tropical Paradise Blast a huge success in June. First a special thanks to the South Oakland County Jazz Band who did an outstanding job providing us music all afternoon. What great music!

  • A very warm thanks to Securitas, our guard security company, who provided all the great meat. What an awesome job! A heartfelt thanks to Terri Ricketts and Marilyn Aldinger who helped make the 30 pies for dessert (and yum, were they good!) and to Linda Foltz who delivered them all around the neighborhood to various refrigerators!

  • Thanks to Linda Foltz, Diane Hodgson, Carole & Nelson Davey and Kathy & Dave Williams for letting us use their refrigerators! A big thanks to Linda Foltz and Marilyn Aldinger who helped set-up and serve all the food (even cut and served all those pies!). Many hands helped clean-up and we are ever so thankful! A special thanks to Cathy & Al Hansen and Mary Hennessy who stayed to the end helping do dishes and putting everything away.

  • And finally to Nelson Davey and John Bell who moved all the furniture around to make room! It was one of our largest summer events and it was fun! Thank you everyone for your helping hands!

  • Several of our Block Volunteers have “retired” after serving for several years. A very heartfelt thanks to Cathy Hansen, Jean Mohan, Diane Wilson, and Ceil Kudla for their years of dedication and devotion in delivering newsletters to the mailboxes on their “blocks”. We truly appreciate all you have done in getting this information out to the homeowners and will miss you! Thanks ever so much! !

JULY IS ICE CREAM MONTH

In recognition of ice cream as a nutritious and wholesome food and the contributions of the ice cream industry to the well-being of the nation’s dairy sector, July was designated as National Ice Cream Month by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.

ICE CREAM FIRSTS

  • Hand-cranked Ice Cream Churn: Invented by Nancy Johnson in 1846

  • First Commercial Ice Cream Plant: Established in Baltimore, MD by Jacob Fussell in 1851

  • Ice Cream Novelties on a Stick - Eskimo Pie, Good Humor Bar and Popsicle: Developed and first sold
    during the inventive 1920’s

  • Soft Ice Cream Machine: Invented in 1939

SODA FOUNTAIN DELIGHTS

  • Ice Cream Soda: During the soda fountain’s heyday, a soda jerk’s skill was judged by how well he made ice cream sodas. A classic was the “black and white.”

  • Soda jerks developed colorful jargon to describe the various orders that customers placed, but the terms and their meanings varied from place to place. Here are a few common ones:

* Bucket of Cold Mud (Bowl of Chocolate Ice Cream) * Houseboat (Banana Split)* Cold Spot (Ice Tea) *Cosmopolitan (Neapolitan) * Hail (Ice)* Cow Juice (Milk) * White Cow (Vanilla Milk Shake) * Velvet (Milk Shake)
* Fluff It (Whipped Cream) * Maiden’s Delight (Cherries) * Bad News (Check)

Ponderings From the Manager

As you look at the newsletter and calendar each month, you will find lots of activities, events and trips scheduled for your enjoyment. With each event you will find a sign-up date included. These dates are very important, as tickets often need to be purchased or food needs to be purchased for the event scheduled. Of course these things need to be done prior to the event! I understand that often schedules change and you find you are available to attend a function that you originally were unable too. A phone call to check to see if availability is accepted (could be cancellations) is fine. However, these dates must be noticed and attention must be given to them! At the last event in June (the Tropical Paradise Blast), there were 18 people who called within the last 48 hours of the event to either state they were coming and would pay upon arrival; or ask if there were openings. With 125 in attendance, accepting more at that late date was an impossibility and I had to turn lots of people away! Please watch these dates carefully and be sure you are signing up to attend in a timely manner. If you find your schedule changes and you can not attend, refunds will be given as stated in our policy. This is one of the reasons you write separate checks for all events; it’s much easier to return your money if you have a conflict at a later time. However, with scheduled bus trips, it’s a little different. If tickets have already been purchased and you find you can not attend the event, unfortunately you become the owner of those tickets! We will share with you any names on a Waiting List or you are welcome to find someone else to buy and use your tickets. You will also find that each event has a number in parenthesis which tells you how many people need to sign-up for the event to make it happen. If there is an (8) after the sign-up date, it means that 8 people must sign-up in order for the event to occur. We have had to cancel events because of not enough interest and later heard the disappointment because some were just “going to come” or sign-up late. So, to avoid disappointment; please help us! Watch the dates and make your commitments early! You will find lots of great offerings here at Heritage in the Hills. We try to find activities and events that everyone will enjoy. Please let us know that you have the interest and sign-up in a timely manner so that we can continue to make the offerings! I thank you in advance for your consideration in this matter!

The month of June has certainly hit us with deep summer, hasn’t it? It’s been great for the pool activity, but very hard on our lawns! We haven’t had too many “over watering” problems this year and Mike from Miller Landscape thanks you for that! We appreciate all of you working hard on getting your irrigations systems working properly so watering isn’t occurring on days of cutting. But it has been very dry throughout the state. If you find your lawn was “skipped” from cutting; it is because the landscape crew thought it would harm the grass because of the drought. They have raised the mowing levels and are doing the best they can during these hard times. If you have any questions regarding your lawn, never hesitate to give me a call in the office. Remember, if you find any broken sprinkler heads due to the cutting of the grass, report it to the office so that we can get the problem fixed as quickly as possible. There will be no charge if the head is damaged from the mowers. If, however, there is a maintenance problem with the head Miller will give you an estimate on what it will cost to make the repair. Even though the drought has been a problem during this month, I still think the community is looking beautiful! The flowers are blooming in their beauty. Hope you all join us in the community garden walk in July to see all the beautiful gardens in this community. They are literally awesome and quite beautiful! Remember to call us and invite the group to walk through your yard to see the beauty of your gardens. And thank you for the opportunity to see your hard work!

Many have stopped by and seen the craft room at the clubhouse. It does look lovely. The gatehouse is now being restored. We have had the walls painted, ceramic tiled the floor in the restroom and have added carpeting. We will be replacing lights and other fixtures within the next couple weeks. The outside of the building has been power-washed and the dog houses (which hold the arms) will be painted. Please feel welcome to stop on in and see what we’ve accomplished. It certainly has “brightened” up the building. The guards are certainly appreciative of all of our work. This was a long overdue job! It was all the “original” builder paint inside the building. You can imagine after 8 years what it looked like! If you stop in, let me know what you think!

Many have commented on the new elliptical trainer machine in the exercise room with how wonderful the workout is. Don Cassidy is willing to show you how to use the machine properly. You can sign-up to meet with Don in the exercise room. Enjoy the sights and sounds of summer! Hope you are using the pool! It certainly is beautiful! It’s a great place to sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty of Heritage!

Kathy Mischley and Sylvia Imbrunnone had a wonderful turnout for the Papa Joe’s tour and lunch last month. It is a beautiful facility and they treated our Red Hatters like royalty. Red and purple flowers and napkins, excellent service with wonderful, tasty cuisine. Sylvia made marvelous red/purple jewelry pouches for souvenirs. Thanks ladies for a job well done!

Gretchen Thams and Rita Stringfellow are hosting a tour to the Chrysler Museum with lunch following at Bistro Bourdeau on Tuesday, July 24th at 10:00 am. Flyers are at the clubhouse. Contact Gretchen Thams (248-364-3313) or Rita Stringfellow (248-276-0272) to register or for more information.

PLEASE do not pay for trip registrations at the Clubhouse. Pay the hostesses for that event. It is important that you RSVP by the deadline set on the flyer. There are still Red Hat Honey lists on our credenza at the Clubhouse waiting to be picked-up. Remember to take only the list with your name on it. THANKS!

(From the June, 2007 Board Meeting)

To increase communications about Board activities we are placing a brief overview of some of the topics discussed at each month’s Board meeting in the monthly newsletter. Here are some topics from last month:

Association News:
  1. The General Meeting of the Heritage in the Hills Homeowners Association was well attended. Board President Bob Luttermoser introduced the Board of Directors and also thanked several residents who have shared their time and talents with our community. Resident Joe Colombo gave a brief overview of the current real estate market in Oakland County and Auburn Hills. Several homes in Heritage have been sold in recent weeks.

  2. Association Attorney Ed Lee gave an update of our lawsuit on the deteriorating concrete in our community. At present, Mr. Lee is waiting for clarification on several items from the judge in our case. If any residents have any correspondence between themselves and our builder/developer, they are asked to give copies to the
Association Manager, Karen Reagan who will forward this information to Mr. Lee.

  3. The Board voted to purchase standard black on white speed limit signs to be placed throughout the community due to several complaints by residents regarding drivers speeding on our streets. The speed limit will be 20 MPH. The Auburn Hills Police may be invited to patrol in Heritage and speeders will be ticketed.

  4. We have had residents question the need for security guards at the gate. It is the Board’s position that
Heritage in the Hills is a gated community and that is the reason people purchased their homes here. However, we are not opposed to exploring options other than a manned security gate in the future.

Clubhouse:

  1. The new elliptical machine has arrived. If you would like to be instructed in its use, please sign up for a class.
The sign-up sheets are in the exercise room.

  2. The craft room has been remodeled and we are very pleased with the outcome. Stop by to see how attractive it looks the next time you visit the clubhouse.

Architectural Review Committee:

Pond Maintenance:

Proper permits have been obtained for installation of an electrical meter at the north pond and this work will begin shortly. This will provide power for an aeration fountain pump.

Landscaping:

The walking path on the west side of Heritage Drive has a fresh layer of wood chips and work on the east path will begin soon. Some parts of the path need to be built up and bridges will be built over the wet areas.

MISSING QUILT SQUARE FOUND!

In the June newsletter it was mentioned that a decorated quilt square was missing. IT HAS BEEN
RETURNED! We were very pleased to find that it was returned without harm. Thank you for returning it!
