  • In April several residents enjoyed our Waffle Brunch in celebration of Spring! It was well received and everyone has been asking when will there be another one! Watch for one in June! Many thanks to all those who answered my panic for waffle makers! Linda Foltz, Judy Bradley, Gayle Balhorn and Claudia Shirk all donated their machines for the cause. Special thanks to Terri Ricketts and Terry Reagan for their assistance in cooking. Also a special thanks to all those who helped clean-up. Your help is always very much appreciated!

THE ORPHAN FOUNDATION OF AMERICA SENDS A MESSAGE OF THANKS!

Millions of Stitches .. Thousands of Scarves .. Each Special To Just One Student!

A picture cannot capture the warmth and concern that has gone into the making of the thousands of hand-knit and crocheted scarves that OFA has received from all over the world. Throughout February 2007, our Virginia office was transformed into a sea of red with a river of other colors running through it.

Thanks to a remarkable outpouring of generosity from individuals and knitting groups, boxes arrived every day from towns and cities across the U.S., as well as faraway places such as Japan and Denmark. We received scarves from people who heard about the program on blogs like Now Norma Knits, from groups like Knitty Gritty in New York, and from Crooks and Hooks—a group of inmates of the Oregon State Prison, who wrote to say that many of their members had experienced foster care.

All of these scarves are being delivered nationwide to older foster youth in post-secondary education and training program through OFA’s annual Valentine’s Day Care Package Program. Our
profound thanks go to FedEx for its generous contribution as the official delivery service for OFA’s Care Package Program. It is difficult to convey the emotion that comes from seeing these beautiful scarves and knowing that all of you made them as gifts of encouragement to young people who are trying to succeed in school and life. We know that a scarf can’t make up for past losses, but we hope that these beautiful hand-made items will wrap our students in warmth and concern. On behalf of our students, staff and volunteers .. THANK YOU!

Note: Our Stitchers Knitch group knitted and crocheted 45 scarves and donated them to this organization for this cause. We thank our crafters for being part of this great program! OFA appreciates you and so do we! Thank you for your outstanding work, dedication & support!

NEW GAME AT THE CLUBHOUSE! - PENNY ANTE

THURSDAY, MAY 17TH AT 7:30 PM

This is a simple yet fun game using pennies. Each player begins with 25 pennies. The “Kitty” should consist of about 100 pennies in a bowl in the center of the table. The person to the left of the “dealer” is the first to draw a card. The player reads the card out loud and then either answers the question or follows the instructions given. If the instructions say, “Take a penny if you like ice cream” and the player does, he would take a penny from the “Kitty”. If the instructions say, “Give a penny to each person who is wearing a ring,” then everyone wearing a ring is identified and the player gives everyone a penny from his pile. The game proceeds around the table until all the cards are played or until time has run out. At the end of play pennies are counted to determine the “winner.” Come join with us to give this a try. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

Sign-up to join us by 5-14 (4)!

Ponderings From the Manager

So nice to see so many “snow birds” returning to Michigan and back home to Heritage in the Hills! We’ve missed you all and are glad to hear you’ve all had a wonderful winter season. Glad you are all happy to be home and hope you will find all kinds of interesting and fun things to do this spring and summer on this month’s calendar !

Miller Landscape will begin cutting the first week of May. I know I stated in April’s newsletter that the cutting would begin the 3rd week of April. It was decided to hold off a week because the grass was not yet in need of cutting. Our contract is for a certain number of cuttings and we felt we would be better off waiting and adding that cutting onto the end! They have been busy in the community however doing maintenance on all the common areas and getting the clubhouse and pool area ready for the upcoming summer season. They have
completed all reports of damaged sod and sprinkler heads (at least appointments scheduled if not completed).

As we enter into the cutting season, I will review the cutting and watering schedule. Phase I and III will be cut on Tuesday. West of the Clubhouse around Hillsdale will be cut on Wednesday and East of the Clubhouse around Hillsdale will be cut on Thursday. This means the watering schedule should coincide with the cutting as follows: Tuesday cuts - DO NOT WATER ON MONDAY OR TUESDAY;
Wednesday cuts - DO NOT WATER ON TUESDAY OR WEDNESDAY; and Thursday cuts - DO NOT WATER ON WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY. THIS MEANS NO WATERING ON THE DAY YOU ARE SCHEDULED FOR CUTTING! If you would like to turn your water on after the cutting is completed; that will be acceptable. One of the biggest problems Miller has in this community is the over-watering that occurs. It is very difficult to do a fine cut when the grass is wet or there is sitting water caused by over-watering. Please cooperate with us with this schedule and do your part and don’t water the day before or the morning of your scheduled cutting. Your support and cooperation will be greatly appreciated. If you need help in changing your irrigation control box to support this watering schedule, just call the office and we will be glad to assist.

Miller began COMPOST PICK-UP on Wednesday, April 18th as was defined on April’s calendar. It will continue through the summer. Please remember to put your compost in brown paper compost bags. Have them out to your curb by 10:00 am on Wednesday. If you
forget and you see them picking up, please do not just put it out to the curb after that time. Call the office and we will see what we can do to have yours picked up at a later time.

Also remember that through-out the season if you find you have a broken sprinkler head on your property and you believe it was the cause of the grass cutters, please call the office to report it. The office will report it to Miller at which time Darci or Jennifer will call you to
schedule a time to come out and do the repair. If the repair is due to the lawn cutting crew, there will be no cost. However, if there is a general maintenance problem with the sprinkler head; there may be a charge for the maintenance. I join with Miller in inviting you to come on over Saturday and meet the Miller crew. Think you’ll be sorry if you miss this one!

Just a reminder about signing up for events and trips. All events have a sign-up date and a number in parenthesis; which is the number of participants we need to make the event happen. Or in the event of OUR bus trips; it’s the number of tickets that are available. Please pay closer attention to these dates! The big trips that we schedule have a minimum and we need to meet it way before the date of the scheduled event. Remember tickets and buses have to paid for long before the trip happens. Your cooperation would be appreciated!

If you haven’t yet picked up your Picture Directory from the library, I encourage to do so. Do know, however, that our website has been updated to include the pictures in the Roster. Check out the website if you haven’t already. Go to “Residents Only” file and click on Resident Roster OR JUST CLICK HERE. You will find it very convenient with pictures attached. If you need the User Name or Password, contact the office and we will remind you. Remember, don’t share this information with anyone outside the community. Check it out! Think you’ll enjoy it!

POOL RULES

  1. Only residents and their guests will be permitted to use the pool facilities. Pool passes must be worn while in the pool area and visible to the Pool Operator. You must sign-in upon entrance into the pool area.

  2. Absolutely no diving or jumping of any kind in the pool or spa.

  3. No running or horseplay allowed in the pool area.

  4. No glass containers in the pool area; use only plastic or aluminum.

  5. Michigan Law prohibits the use of alcoholic beverages in the hot tub; or entering the pool or spa while intoxicated.

  6. Young children/toddlers MUST wear swim diapers—NEVER regular disposable diapers. A changing table is available in the Women’s Restroom in the Clubhouse. Please change children in that location; not at the pool side.

  7. Children under 12 are NOT PERMITTED in the hot tub. This is a State Law and will be strictly enforced.
Food and beverages only allowed at the upper deck of the pool area (where the tables and umbrellas are located).

  8. Large floats and toys are not permitted. Noodles and other swim-type aids are allowed.

  9. Radios are only permitted at the pool area with headphones.

  10. Please remember before leaving to lower the umbrella, use the trash containers and clean-up the area you used!

  11. Proper swimwear is required. Cut-offs are not considered proper swimwear. Swimwear is not appropriate for use inside the clubhouse except to use the restrooms. Please dry off and wear an appropriate cover-up and shoes while inside the clubhouse.

  12. Showers are available for use before and after swimming in the restrooms inside the clubhouse. Please use them!

IMPORTANT PROCEDURES TO REMEMBER

When entering the pool area, you will need to have your pool passes. Check-in/Check-out as you enter or leave the pool area. If the gates are locked; enter the pool area through the clubhouse using your key. Each household has been issued 2 Resident and 2 Guest Swim Passes. If you need extra pool passes or have more guests for a day visit, speak to the office staff prior to usage for permission. Showers are available in the restrooms for your convenience. We suggest showering BEFORE and after swimming. Please provide your own soap and towels and NEVER leave the water running when done showering. Children under 10 using the bathroom or shower facilities must be accompanied by an adult.

When you are at the pool, please familiarize yourself with the Injury/Medical Contingency Plan that is posted. If there is an emergency, it might be your responsibility to react to it. KNOW WHAT TO DO! Familiarize yourself with the emergency phone so that you know it’s location and how to operate it. It only dials 9-1-1; it can’t be used for any other call. One of the Pool Operators must be notified immediately in case of emergency. The Pool Operators will not be at the pool area during all open hours; but will be available within 10 minutes at any time. If you occur any accidents while at the poolside, please report them immediately to a Pool Operator. Accidents include things such as tripping, falling, sore feet, dizziness, fainting, fecal accidents, etc. Remember that the Pool Operators are not lifeguards. Your Pool Operators are: John Bell (248-495-7723) and Karen Reagan (248-722-5797).

The pool temperature is maintained at approximately 85 degrees while the spa is maintained at 104 degrees. Please DO NOT enter the Pool House or touch any of the equipment at any time. If there are problems with the system, notify a Pool Operator immediately.

Please understand that there are times that the pool will have to be closed for reasons beyond our control. Situations such as when water chemicals are unsettling, equipment failures, spillage of blood or feces or even inclement weather. We will do all possible to open the pool as soon as possible. If you see the “Pool Closed” sign posted, DO NOT ENTER the pool area. If you are asked to leave the pool area by a Pool Operator because of an emergency pool closure, please cooperate and know we aren’t happy about it either! We have lots of procedures to follow driven by the county and state and must keep the health and safety as our first concern. We truly would appreciate your support and cooperation during these times.

In case of inclement weather, the pool and spa will be automatically closed. If you are at the pool and thundering and lightening begins; please leave the pool area at once. If shelter is needed, please enter the clubhouse. If the weather is demonstrating a light rain; the pool will remain open and you are welcome to wait on the deck until it passes. However, the pool must be evacuated if it is raining; NO EXCEPTIONS! It will only be closed at the sighting of lightening and thunder.

While at the pool area, if you see the Pool Rules or Procedures are not been followed, please notify a Pool Operator or a staff member in the office. They will handle the situation and make sure the rules are being enforced without putting you in an awkward position.

Anyone causing damage to the pool, pool area, spa, bathrooms or pool furniture will be held liable for all damages.

Violation of Pool Rules may result in suspension of pool privileges. The Management and Association Board reserves the right to alter, amend, revoke or add rules as deemed necessary; at which time you will be notified.
