PACERS WALKING CLUB
Heritage Walk Club Begins Friday, April 20th at 10:00
“Walking” is defined as a means of escape, a way to get away from
artificial lights and into the fresh air. It’s the “perfect” exercise -
can do good for your physical as well as your mental well-being. Not
only will your spirits be lifted; but your weight and blood pressure
will be gradually reduced and
enhanced by the exercise! Ready to join us?
With us you can walk at your own pace. We will travel by bus to many
beautiful trails throughout our county. Perhaps we will even stop for
lunch following our walk. Watch the schedule to know what we will be
doing. Bring your friends and join us! On our first gathering (FRIDAY,
APRIL 20TH AT 10:00 AM) we will walk in our own community and take along
some garbage bags and do a little spring clean-up along our streets in
celebration of Earth Day. The following week (FRIDAY, APRIL 27th AT
10:00 AM) we will travel to Independence-Oaks in Clarkston and walk
their trails and visit their Nature Center. Won’t you join us? Put on
your walking shoes, grab a bottle of water and get some exercise while
having fun!

Ponderings From the Manager
It is so wonderful to walk outside and see the green come “shining”
through of new plants and growth. Even little “ears” are popping up from
daffodils and tulips. Even the trees are beginning to bud and the birds
are singing their songs! Isn’t it wonderful having the sun
shining through? Well, it is the beginning of Spring; hopefully we won’t
see anymore snow fall this year. However, I’m not real confident that will
be! So, please be a little patient and don’t remove those orange sticks
yet from your property. Let’s make sure there won’t be any more of the
white stuff! At least if there is another snow fall; it won’t stick around
for long and we can be happy to see it melt away FAST!
As Spring comes in I know you are all wondering about lawn cutting and
clean-up. Depending on the weather, grass cutting should begin in
mid-April (the 3rd week). The first “cutting” will include clean-up. As in
years past, there will be a reversal of the lawn cutting schedule. This
occurs to try to keep everyone happy! For this season, Phase I and III
will have their lawns cut on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Hillsdale phases
will be cut on Thursday and Friday. A map will be available in the
Clubhouse in early April which will show specifically which day you can
expect to have your lawn cut. Please remember that this is “general”
schedule. Inclement weather may change your cutting day if necessary. Also
when the grass is thick and long at the end of the season, the schedule
may change due to extra cuttings, etc.
It is that time that you will be getting out and taking a look at how your
property survived the winter months. If you see any problems which you
believe were caused by a snow plow or shovel; please give us a call in the
office so that we can add it to our list. Miller Landscape will be here
the first couple weeks of April to repair these problems. All repairs
should be completed before the first grass cutting. Just a reminder as we
get into the season .. if you find you have a broken sprinkler head and
you feel it was the fault of the landscapers, call and report to us in the
office. Miller will call and schedule a time for the repair with you. If
you decide to get the repair done on your own, Miller will not accept a
receipt and will not reimburse you for that bill. So, let your fingers do
the walking and call us and we will have them get in touch with you!
There are just a few Clubhouse concerns to share with you this month.
First, if you come into the Clubhouse and turn on the lights; please turn
them off properly. For those lights with “slider” lights; there is also a
button at the bottom of the plate. Please DO NOT just push the slider down
and assume the light is off. Power is still going to the light! It must be
turned off by the button at the bottom. Your assistance in this matter
would be greatly appreciated. Secondly, groups that are using the
Clubhouse on a weekly basis need to be reminded of the guidelines and
procedures for using the rooms. Remember that exclusive usage will not be
considered except for a Private Party. Please remember that clean-up after
each meeting/event is expected and includes the following: returning the
room to original set-up (tables, chairs and blinds), kitchen clean-up to
include the return of all supplies to storage, washing coffee pots and
urns plus all utensils used, and washing tablecloths if spillage occurs.
If a meal is served, remove garbage bags to outside receptacle. Turn off
all lights (restrooms included) and return the thermostat to the original
setting if it has been changed. Please remember that the refrigerator may
contain items that look pleasing. These food items are usually there for a
purpose and are not to be used by your group. If you bring in food and
there is are left-overs; take them home and do leave them at the Clubhouse
on the counters, in the refrigerator or in any of the cupboards. Thank you
for your cooperation in being more aware of these procedures and taking
care to meet them!
The Heritage Resident Photo Directory is finally completed! You are
welcome to pick-up your copy of the directory at your convenience at the
Clubhouse. They will be in alphabetical order in the library on the glass
table. Each directory has a label on it with everyone’s name and address.
There is one directory per home. The program we used was quite
frustrating; but we finally made it through it all and came out with a
nice finished project. We ended up running the directory in-house with our
new copier and did the best we could! I think you will find the directory
an asset and a help in identifying residents. I hope next time we do this
project that more of you decide to participate and include your picture.
Please note that the directory in the back includes all residents. We are
also looking at this being added to our website under the “Resident” only
file. Throughout the month, check out the website and see if you find it
there! Again, a very warm thanks to Greg Barney for all hard work and
dedication to this project! Special thanks to all those who put them all
together and to Andrea in the office for not losing her patience and
figuring it all out so professionally! What a great team we had doing this
project! Hope you enjoy it!
Did you know that the Recreation Card you have from the Auburn Hills
Community Center is no longer be valid? They have changed their system!
You need to take your ID (and your old card if you have one) and stop up
at the Community Center to get the new picture ID card. The Center is
located in Civic Center Park, 1827 N. Squirrel Road. The hours of
operation are Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 9PM and Saturday from 10AM - 9PM.
Remember, you must take your ID as proof of residency is required.
You will find information included in this newsletter regarding a trip
scheduled to The Shaw Festival on June 27th and 28th. It has been a few
years since we have traveled to The Stratford Festival and more interest
was shown to travel to this festival again. Please consider coming along
with us! Look at the information and do not hesitate! We need you to make
a commitment now to attend with us! Tickets have been ordered, hotel rooms
reserved and a fun time planned. Hope you can join us to hear more about
the trip on Wednesday, April 18th at 4:00 pm. If you can’t make the
meeting but are interested in going; please contact me in the office and
let me know! I hope after all this planning, this trip will be a success.
It will, with YOU! Happy Easter and Happy Passover to All!

- HITH HERITAGE QUILT
Our Heritage Quilt effort continues through April & May!All resident
families are invited to come in and decorate a cotton square piece of
material. There will be paints and markers available to do this. You can
just put your name on your square. Or perhaps draw a picture. Or write
something you enjoy about Heritage in the Hills. Decorate how you’d
like. In June we take all the squares and sew them together to make a
quilt front. We will ask our Sewing Group to help us to finish the
quilt. Once competed, we will display the quilt at the clubhouse for all
to enjoy!
Quilt squares will continue to be available for decorating during
regular office hours. The squares and pens and paints are in the craft
room. Decorate your square here and leave it or take it home with you If
you desire and decorate it there and then bring it back to us. Some have
done quilting; some have drawn a picture; some have just their name. It
doesn’t have to be “fancy”; no contest to artist ability; just be part
of it! Just plan on doing one .. or two! This will be a beautiful
heirloom which will be around the clubhouse for years to come. Don’t be
disappointed that you didn’t get down to the clubhouse to make your
square and be part of this piece of history! Feel proud to look at the
quilt and say “that’s MY square!” If you would like help or ideas for
your square, just see us in the office and we will give you some ideas.
Do yours today before it’s too late!!

THINGS TO CONSIDER
By: Larry A. Prior, Board Member
The time has come. We are now a community of nearly 500 individuals. Have
you ever given thought to who picks up your left over trash when leaving a
community sponsored social event? Have you ever thought about who it is
that turns off the treadmill that was left running, who has to clean up
the kitchen the day after or who has to rearrange all the chairs and
tables when found in a state of disarray? Well that person is probably
someone else. I wonder who that person is? Do you have any idea who it may
be? If it’s not you, then who is it?
Recently during Karen’s absence, while on her honeymoon, I sat in the
office in her place and I became aware of many things that I feel each of
you should know. First of all, there is no one that is charged
specifically with the responsibility to clean up after each of us.
Secondly, the person who does do all these things on a day to day basis is
Karen. This is not in Karen’s job but she does it anyway. Why does she do
this you may ask? The answer is simply that no one else does. We all need
to keep in mind the fact that the Clubhouse is essentially our community’s
living room. It is what every person who enters our community sees first
and is the main reason they choose to buy a home in our community. The
Clubhouse is the heart of our community. It is what maintains the value of
our homes. Please always keep this in mind and help us to maintain a
clean, attractive and inviting Clubhouse. To accomplish this goal we ask
you to help us by adhering to the following:
-
Never touch any of the
thermostats, always check with the office to have adjusted.
-
Always turn off all exercise
equipment before leaving the exercise room.
-
Leave all lights as you
found them. If you turn a light on, turn it off before leaving.
-
Do not leave a sack of books
in the library. Place all books neatly on the shelves.
-
If you close the blinds;
open them before leaving. Leave the room as you found it!
-
Always return chairs,
pillows, tables and other furniture to their proper place.
-
If you open an umbrella on
the pool deck, please close it when you leave the area.
-
Return all deck chairs and
tables to their proper place when leaving the pool area.
-
Always throw out all
leftover, perishable food products. Do not try to save!
-
Pick up after yourself.
Properly discard all trash before leaving social events.
-
Place all kitchen utensils
and containers in their proper, labeled drawer or cupboard.
In addition to the above, we would ask you to keep in mind the following
additional items as each will make it easier for Karen to properly manage
and control the many activities in and around the Clubhouse. Please do
your part to help us.
-
Always sign up for community
socials and events prior to their respective deadlines.
-
Always pay for all community
socials and events prior to their respective deadlines.
-
Never remove a sign-up sheet
from its plastic jacket and sign up for an event or social.
-
When visiting the Clubhouse
always bring your entry key as the office may be closed.
-
Once the pool opens, always
visibly display your pool passes when using the pool.
-
Always properly sign in and
out when using the pool and/or hot tub this summer.
-
Always accompany guests and
family members when they are in the pool area.
-
Adhere to all posted pool
and hot tub rules which are mandated by Oakland County.
-
Always notify the Gatehouse
when you are expecting guests or deliveries.
-
I you have any ideas for
improvements, new ideas for social events or resident activities,
please leave a note in the suggestion box in the Clubhouse lobby.

From the Ground Up…
Helpful Information from Miller Landscape, Inc.
The preferred landscape contractor for Heritage in the Hills
We, at Millers, are often asked about pruning.
The questions are many and they usually center around when and how to
properly prune plant
material. Sometimes they even ask “Why should I prune?”
This is a great place to start. There are basically four reasons to prune
plant material:
-
To train the plant
-
To maintain the health of
the plant
-
To contain the growth of the
plant
-
To improve the quality of
flowers, fruit, and foliage.
When should you prune? There
are several times during the year when pruning is a good idea, depending
on the plant you want to prune. A simple rule of thumb for many spring
flowering shrubs is to prune after the 4th of July, when all the blooms
are gone. It is very important to prune plants damaged by storms or
vandalism or with dead branches, as soon as possible in order to reduce
the risk of additional insect and disease problems they may develop.
How should you prune? With good, sharp pruning equipment so that your cuts
are clean and smooth. This practice goes a long way in encouraging the
rapid healing of the “wound.” And since we are talking about healing,
let’s discuss “wound dressing.” Traditionally it was thought that pruning
paint, applied to the actual cut surface, would help protect the tree from
insects and disease. Scientists now tell us that dressing the wound with
paint is only cosmetic and may, in reality, slow the healing process.
Actual pruning techniques are fairly complex and vary with the type of
plant material being pruned. There is great information available on the
internet.
Of course, if you would like your shrubs, trees, or evergreens pruned
professionally, Miller Landscape crews will be at Heritage all season long
and would be happy to take care of this important task for you. Feel free
to call us at 248-391-2889 and we will set it all up through our new
Heritage in the Hills Home Care Solutions program. If you have a minute,
we would also invite you to take a look at our website:

Thank you!
