"A Christmas Poem"
By Evamarie Spataro, age 10

Sleigh bells, snowflakes, and more to some. This means Christmas.
Christmas is special and magical and anything can happen!
A tree in your home is a tradition . Bells and lights will be hung from its majestic branches.
An angel, a star, or even a Santa Clause on top makes it all worthwhile.
Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year!

Perk Up With Peppermint

If December’s hustle and bustle has left you wiped out, grab a candy cane. Studies show that smelling or tasting of peppermint offers a quick pick-me-up. The aroma has the same effect as a whiff of smelling salts!

STAR LIGHT, STAR BRIGHT

On the night of December 13th, catch one of the year’s most spectacular meteor showers by following these tips from NASA scientist Douglas Hudgins, Ph.D. Up to 120 shooting stars an hour could be seen!

Face eat or southeast to find the Gemini constellation. Known as the Geminid Shower, the meteors appear to originate from a single point in the constellation. Because Gemini lies within the northern hemisphere of the sky, most people in the U.S. should have a good view - barring bad weather or bright city lights - by facing that group of stars. Although some showers will start after 10 pm, the best time for viewing is between midnight & 4:30 am.Find a dark area. If possible, sit in a reclining chair or lie down.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY & CONDOLENCES

Our Deepest Sympathies go to resident Mary Ann Ranger (and husband Bob) who lost her mother in November. Her mother was also a resident of Heritage. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. God Bless !

NOTES OF THANKS …
From Residents to Your Home:

  • Willie Swayze writes: To My Dear Heritage Friends and Neighbors: Thank you so much for the lovely basket of flowers, prayer shawl, cards, food and loving support after my recent knee replacement. I am so fortunate to live in such a caring community. God Bless you All!

  • Sally Wilkins shares: To My Heritage Hills Neighbors: Thank you all for your prayers, cards and beautiful basket of autumn flowers during my recent illness and surgery. Your thoughtfulness and caring are greatly appreciated!

  • Judy Thayer from Family Home Health Services sends her thoughts: It was truly a pleasure meeting with the residents at Heritage on November 15th for the seminar on “Healthy Aging”. I truly enjoyed meeting the folks and enjoyed our conversation at the fire side. Thank you for making me feel so welcomed and for allowing me to have the time with these special people. I hope to come back and do more seminars and look forward to meeting more folks at Heritage in the Hills. Karen, you told me that your community was the “best kept secret” in Auburn Hills; and I truly believe that! What a beautiful community! Wishing you all a very happy holiday filled with joy and peace. Thanks again for the opportunity!

  • (Just an FYI from Karen) Judy came just before the community Thanksgiving dinner and delivered 15 beautiful mum plants as a thank you for allowing her to come to the community. They were simply beautiful plants. Seeing that we were decorating for Christmas the next day, I passed those plants along to the busy elves as a thank you for their hard work. It was a very nice gesture on part of Family Home Health Services and we thank them!)

Ponderings From the Manager

Many have called asking about the many pear leaves that have fallen since Miller did their last fall clean-up. As you can see, the Board elected to have one more sweep done to try to get rid of some of those leaves. Hope you find your properties satisfactory. The pear leaves are the last to drop and with the weather we’ve had; they’ve taken their time! Miller has
completed the clean-up as of this writing.

Next to come is snow, snow, snow! As I sit writing this, I am watching the weather forecast and it looks like it may come before we’d like! Just a few reminders about snow plowing. Miller usually responds once there is at least a one inch accumulation. They may come out and do the main roads if there is ice conditions. They do notify me when they are coming out and as usual, I ask for your patience while they are doing their work. They work efficiently in getting the community cleaned up as quickly as possible. Remember, the community is quite large and if you don’t see them at your home, it doesn’t mean they aren’t in the community working! Remember to do your best in not parking cars on the streets if possible. If you do, please understand that there is a good chance that the car will be plowed in; depending of course on the amount of snow fall we have. If you do have a car that isn’t parked in the garage and you know that Miller is near your home, you can work with them by moving the car from the drive-way so that it can be cleaned. Once it is cleaned, move it back up to the drive-way and have it cleared from the street. This always seems to be a problem with cars not parked in the garage. Your support and cooperation in helping will be greatly appreciated.

I hope you’ve all had a chance to come to the clubhouse to see the beauty of the season in full. The many hands of residents decorated and put up trees. We have beautiful trees! The outside lights look great too, thanks to Miller Landscape. Be sure to go into the game room (card room) and check out the newest tree this season, the Red Hat Tree. The members of our Red Hat Chapter, The Red Hat Hot Honey’s, made the red hat ornaments and adorned the tree in purple and red. It is truly a beautiful tree and hope you enjoy looking at the hats. Thanks to the Red Hats for their hard work and beauty! Be sure to also check out the train and trolley we have added this year thanks to Bob Girvan. He has shared some of his fun collections to complete our tree decorations. A special thanks to Bob for sharing with us!

Several residents have asked about the Picture Directory. It has taken some time to collate the directory and get it ready for printing. We now have our part completed and will be taking it in for bids for printing and collating. As soon as we have more information, we will surely let you know! I believe it will be January before we have it ready for distribution. It will be a neat addition to our regular roster that you all received at the Annual Meeting. I think you will find it very handy. We will also be looking at adding it to our website, so watch for more information on that. This would be available under the Residents Only subtitle on the website. That means you need the user name and password to access it. If you do not remember that information, please give me a call at the clubhouse and I’ll be happy to remind you. This will be a great tool for those of you that travel and have a computer. Remember that the newsletter and calendar are on the website monthly also. We do mail the newsletter if you request, but finding it on the website is also always available.

You will find several ways to celebrate the holiday this month with gatherings at the Clubhouse. The first is coming quickly with the Holiday Open House. Bring along an appetizer to share and come on over to enjoy a cup of holiday punch. We will offer many punches; non-alcoholic and alcoholic alike. We have holiday music played on the keyboard by Charley
Gehringer. It’s a great time to gather with your neighbors and friends and share the holiday joy. We also have the hand bell choir performing their holiday concert with dessert following. And a Ladies Holiday Luncheon and Tea. Also you will find a Cookie Exchange and a Holiday Sing Along (we just have a good time sitting and singing; enjoying the holiday decorations and will have cookies, egg nog, hot chocolate and coffee). We also will be having our annual New Years Eve party at the clubhouse which is always a gala event. Look at the calendar for specific dates and times. I sure hope you find time in your busy holiday calendars to come join us for some of these festivities.

For all of you traveling this holiday season, I wish you safe travel. If you are leaving for an extended period of time, please be sure to notify me in the office. Be sure to keep in touch with me; call and say hello now and again .. or remember you can always drop me an email from the website. I will miss you all and will be anxious to see all of you “snow birds” again in the spring. I love it when you all come home again! As the holidays are quickly upon us, I also wish each and every one of you the happiest of holidays. May you all have the gladness of Christmas which is hope; the spirit of Christmas which is peace; and the heart of Christmas which is love. Be sure to take time to laugh and to hug. Remember to wish, to dream and to hope. Take time to wonder, to reflect and to remember; for this time is a gift and a blessing. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah and a Happy Kwanzaa! Peace and love to all from my heart to yours!

  • THE CELEBRATIONS OF HANUKKAH

The word Hanukkah means rededication. The holiday symbolizes a yearly rededication to the Jewish faith and its traditions.

The menorah is a nine-stemmed candle. One candle, called the shamus, is raised higher than the others. It is used to light the remaining candles. One candle is lit the first night, 2 the second, 3 the third, etc., until all are lit on the eighth night.

A dreidel is a top with four square sides that is spun in a children’s game. On each side of the dredel is a
character. The characters are read as “a great miracle happened there” if played in America and “a great miracle happened here” if played in Israel. Often the game is played with chocolate Hanukkah gelt - gold coins.

  • Sunday, February 11th - 3:00 Matinee - She Loves Me at the Croswell Opera House in Adrian - $20 . This is a heart-warming musical that opened on Broadway in 1963, with songs by Bock and Harnick (the songwriting team for Fiddler on the Roof), received five Tony Award nominations and was revived on Broadway in 1993, capturing another nine Tony Award nominations. This intimate show is considered by many the most charming musical ever written and is perfectly suited for the Croswell’s “Valentine’s Day” production. Georg and Amalia are two feuding clerks in an European parfumerie during the 1930’s who secretly find solace in their anonymous romantic pen pals, little knowing their respective correspondents are none other than each other. SHE LOVES ME is a romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance and nostalgia, yet as universal and relevant as ever in this age of Internet romances. The Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan film “You’ve Got Mail” was based on this musical. We will have dinner at The Hathaway House in Blissfield following the performance. Dinner cost is on your own.Sign-up by 12-30-06. (15 Total Tickets Available)

(From the November, 2006 Board Meeting)

To increase communications about Board activities we are placing a brief overview of some of the topics discussed at each month’s Board meeting in the Monthly newsletter. Here are some topics from last month:

ASSOCIATION NEWS:

As you know, Tienken Road has re-opened. The City of Auburn Hills will add a berm and landscaping in the spring to the area next to the previous barrier, which should ease the noise to the homes backing up to that area.

We have no new information to report on our lawsuit at this time. The Board will keep residents advised as soon as we have any updates.

CLUBHOUSE:

  1. The holiday lights went up a little earlier than usual this year for two reasons. (1) Miller Landscaping wanted to take advantage of the good weather, and (2), there were electrical problems that needed to be corrected before turning on the lights for the community Thanksgiving dinner.

  2. The Board is looking into replacing our copy machine and printer in the office. A new copier should cut down on our outside printing costs.

ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE:

Tree Removal:

A new survey of trees in the common areas has been completed and several dead trees have been marked for removal. These diseased trees along with trees on resident's properties will be cost estimated by the Tree Care Company in early December. After approval and payment by residents, removal of private trees will begin in late December.

Community Walk Around:

Members of the Board have completed a partial walk-around in the community and letters will be going out to residents who need to take corrective action on their property. A primary problem is uneven sidewalks in front of houses. Correcting this problem is the homeowner’s responsibility. The Board will make arrangements in the spring with a contractor who will be willing to make these repairs at a group rate. The cost of these repairs will be the responsibility of the homeowner. If you receive a letter and would like to take advantage of using this contractor, please call Karen at the office and she will add your name to the list.
