Special Recognition To Our Residents:

A heartfelt thanks to all of those that stepped in and helped clean-up after the St. Patrick’s Day social last month especially to Sue Soltess who stayed right to the end! It was a fun event with great food! Be sure to check out the pictures on the website!

A very warm thanks to the young adults that came to Heritage in the Hills last month from Woodside Bible Church. They conduct “Random Acts of Kindness” to the community and called to offer their services to us in March. They were busy washing windows, picking up brush along the trails and picking up around the Clubhouse. What a wonderful group of young adults they were; and so anxious to help and work! Kudos to them! They will be returning again in May so be sure to watch for the date and time in the May Heritage Headlines and be sure to sign-up to receive some of their acts of kindness.

A special thanks to Dick Hansen who joined with the Hospitality Committee in delivering a “comfort blanket” to our male residents who are ill. A warm thanks also to Linda Foltz who was so kind to purchase the material for those blankets and then to Linda and Marian Hansen for making them! This is a very gracious act that makes Heritage in the Hills so special!

Let’s hear a note of appreciation to Rosemary Caccamo who sends flowers to those that need it in the community and also to Bonnie Larabee who sends cards. Be sure to thank them for their hard work. Also remember to support the flower fund on a regular basis!

NOTES OF THANKS …
From Residents to Your Home

  • Bill Steele writes: To the Stitchers: It was certainly a nice surprise to receive the blanket you all made for me. And the poem was so appropriate. As you probably know, chemo even makes the men cold! Thank you very much!

  • Tom Brennan shares: To the Care Committee: So nice to be pampered. I use my cozy blanket daily. Your efforts are special and make Heritage in the Hills a special place to live. Thanks so much!

  • A Special Thanks from Karen  - I appreciate all the phone calls, cards and well wishes I received while ill with pneumonia. In attempting to continue to do work from home, I was in the community regularly and was warmed with all the kind gestures. I am feeling much better now and am glad to be back in full force! Thanks again, with sincere appreciation!

Ponderings From the Manager

As spring is upon us, I remind all pet owners to be responsible while walking your pet throughout the community. Please be sure to pick-up after your dog while walking and please remember all pets must be on a lease while walking. Dispose of the droppings appropriately; do not throw it into the woods or into the ponds. Take it home and throw it in your trash! Remember that this is not only a Heritage in the Hills policy but also a Auburn Hills ordinance. Your cooperation will be appreciated by all!

Once again please remember to call the clubhouse office to report any damage you see on your property from the snow plows. Miller Landscape will be in the community in mid-April to remove the orange/red stakes on your property and do the repairs for damages. Many have asked if they can remove the stakes. They need to be left in the ground for a while yet in case of another snow fall before we declare the season over! They will remove in a timely manner once we are assured we will receive no more snow fall.

Speaking of Miller Landscape, there will be a change in lawn cutting rotation this year. This change has been made due to resident requests. Although more information on lawn cutting will be in the May newsletter, it is important you are aware of this change now. The beginning of the week (Tuesday and Wednesday) will have the cutters doing the Hillsdale area of the community. The end of the week (Wednesday and Thursday) will have them in Phase I and Phase III. Please remember this change when having your sprinkler system opened and programmed. They will once again ask that you don’t water your lawns the day before cutting or on the day of cutting until after they are done with the job. Failure to comply to this procedure may cause your lawn NOT be cut if the property is too wet. Mike will have some valuable information about this at the seminar he is doing at the clubhouse on Saturday, April 29th. Be sure to mark your calendars and come hear what he has to say! This is a free seminar.

We are still having a problem with thermostats being changed while at the clubhouse and not being turned back to original settings when leaving. Please do not turn the thermostats OFF. Feel free to change the temperature up or down; but when done with your activity, return it to the setting you found it at. Also, while the clubhouse office is open, the lights in the building and the fireplace (season appropriate) will be on. We now have coffee and snacks available on a daily basis and are working hard to make it feel like home! Please do not turn off those lights if we are there. If you find the office closed and lights on; please turn them off at that time. Thank you for your cooperation!

It’s been so nice to see the spring weather upon us. Nice to see residents out and about in the community walking or talking with neighbors.

Welcome home to those that will be returning this month and safe travel wishes to those heading home. We have missed you all! I wish you all an enjoyable Spring and a blessed Passover and Easter!

NEWS FROM THE ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE
REPLACEMENT OF DEAD TREES ON RESIDENT’S PROPERTY

Many residents have inquired about assistance with replacing dead trees which the builder planted in back or side yards and between the sidewalk and curb (“street trees”). All these trees are the responsibility of the individual homeowners. On behalf of the Heritage in the Hills Board of Directors, the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) is coordinating with residents a project to have Miller Landscape Company remove and replace trees which are diseased or dead. All replacement trees must be a minimum 3 inch diameter and 7 feet high. The street trees must be replaced with the same species of tree (except ash or elm). The yard trees may be specified by the resident with the exception of no fruit bearing trees.

The Board of Directors will be making a survey this Spring to identify dead trees and informing residents that they must be replaced. So, if you already know that you have any dead trees from last year, we would ask that you apply at this time to replace them. Please submit an ARC Application (available in the library) to the Clubhouse Office which specifies the trees to be replaced. You will be contacted regarding the cost and timing of this replacement program. We hope that a community-wide effort will result in a cost savings to all. See Karen Brierly if you have any questions.

MULCH AWARENESS
(Shared By Resident, Angel Bakos as Notified by State Farm)

If you use mulch around your home be very careful about this purchase this year. After the hurricane in New Orleans, many trees went over. These trees were then turned into mulch and the state offered to have any state come and haul it away. So, it will be showing up in stores such as Home Depot at cheap prices. The problem is that these trees may have been infected with the Formosan Termites which are very hard, near impossible, to control. So, be careful what you are buying!

OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE
Did You Know ..

Rain gardens are attractive gardens designed to direct water from your rooftop, driveway or lawn while keeping it on your property as nature intended. By creating a rain garden, you can help improve water quality in your community, local streams, rivers, and lakes. In addition, a rain garden can be a beautiful, low-maintenance way to attract butterflies, birds and other beneficial wildlife. The Clinton River Watershed Council is offering seminars/classes so you can learn step-by-step processes for creating your own rain garden. The classes will be held in Lake Orion (4/5 at 7:00 pm) at the library and in Troy (4/10 at 6:40 pm) at the library. Call 248-391-0304 (ext. 143) for the Lake Orion location information or call 248-524-3538 for information or to register at the Troy
location.

The Clinton River Watershed Council also is sponsoring other seminars such as:
Landscaping for Lakes and Streams which is an interactive workshop where you’ll discover the relationship that your lake or stream has to the Clinton River. Discuss ways to enhance the quality of your waters. Learn “seven simple steps” plus strategies for reducing geese and other common lakefront problems. Learn a practical “how to” process for planning and designing native lake/stream buffers and receive plant lists, sample plans and other related resources. Held on 04/06 at the Bruce Township Offices in Romeo. No pre-registration needed.

They are also offering English Gardens Garden Party Workshops. Learn the “whys and hows” of soil testing, fertilizer selection and people/pet friendly strategies for managing pests. Discover how using native plants and rain gardens can be a beautiful way to bring beneficial wildlife into our neighborhoods, conserve water and reduce water pollution. Walk away with cost-effective ideas to begin making your yard more watershed-friendly this summer. Workshop at English Gardens on Garfield and Hall Road on April 2nd from 12 - 12:45 pm. No registration is required to attend. Give it a try!

CONGRATULATIONS!
